Welcome to Latvia

Baltic Way (Baltijas Ceļš; Baltijos Kelias; Balti Kett ) was a demonstration taking place on August 23, 1989 at 19:00 EEST when ~2 million ( Note: the number is given, taking into account those who attended related demonstrations in the city squares and on side roads as well ) people from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands for 15 minutes, creating an approx. 595-600 kilometers long living chain that connected the three capitals of the Baltic states - Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn.

The Baltic Way took place on the same day 50 years after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbnentrop Pact, and was intended for attracting the World’s attention to the historic facts as well as demanding a public acknoledgement of the secret parts of the Pact by the Soviet government and the restoration of the Independence of the Baltic States.

Baltic Way has been included in the UNESCO ”Memory of the World” programme.
